Our Vision for Maths at Upperthong

We want all children at Upperthong Junior and Infant School, Holmfirth to see themselves as mathematicians and to:

  • Have a positive attitude towards the learning of mathematics and an enjoyment of the challenges posed by maths.
  • Develop a fluency in the different aspects of maths and be able to apply their learning in different context.
  • Develop the ability to solve problems through decision making and reasoning in a range of contexts
  • Develop the mathematical skills and confidence in order to succeed in school and everyday life

Fluency in maths is vital. Therefore we promote the learning of key skills on a regular basis. Children in KS1 complete daily NCETM 'Mastering Number' sessions, and children in KS2 complete weekly Jungle/Rainbow/Planet maths assessments to ensure fluency skills are a priority. We encourage all children to use TImes Table Rockstars and Numbots and give weekly certificates out to children who have made an effort to improve the recall of key facts.

In lessons we use a CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract). Children are introduced to number and new concepts using concrete manipulatives like counters, base ten, tens frames, bead strings, abacus and rekenrek. When children have a good understanding of the concept, maths is represented pictorially. Finally, the children wll be able to solve abstract problems, problems represented in number form.

Different methods and resources for teaching maths are including in the documents below.
