Support Staff

Mrs Amanda Morelli

Hi, I am Amanda Morelli, ETA support for years 5 & 6.  I have worked at the school for over 20 years which makes me one of the longest serving members of staff.  Throughout my time here I have worked within all year groups but for the last 11 years I have been with upper KS2 which is the area of school I enjoy and find the most interesting.  I am part of the Maths, Science and D&T curriculum team and have also been a member of the governing body as staff governor.  Originally I am from Holmfirth and came to Upperthong School as a child. I now live in Marsden with my husband and 3 daughters.  I love spending time with my family and often have my weekends hijacked through my girls love of dance.

Jan Wallis

Mrs Jan Wallis

Hi, I’m Jan Wallis and I am the newest member of the Upperthong team joining the school in January 2017. I mainly work with 2 pupils who are currently in years 1 and 2. I am also part of the PE curriculum team.

All my working life has involved working with children from birth to teens and their families. I started off as a Careers Advice and Guidance worker changing career paths to the Early years when my children were young and I jointly established and ran an Out of School Childcare Club. In more recent years I worked as a Sure Start Locality Manager and have had the privilege of working with communities in Huddersfield and Batley as we built and delivered Sure Start Children Centres. I always volunteered in my own children’s school as a parent helper and school governor. I enjoy, and find it incredibly rewarding, supporting children in their development and learning.

I am married with 2 grown up children. I enjoy running, cycling and generally keeping fit. I look forward to our holidays and love travelling around this fantastic island of ours.… and much further afield, time and money permitting!

However, my family always comes first so spending as much time with them as their busy lives will allow me too is a priority!

Mrs Diane Clarkson

My name is Diane Clarkson and I'm a ETA in Year 4 and a member of the Maths, Science and D&T curriculum team.

I am married with two sons and two grandchildren. My hobby is reading and I like nothing better than to curl up with either a crime thriller or historical fiction book.

Mrs Helen Barrowclough

Hi, I’m Helen Barrowclough  the ETA in Reception.   I am married with 2 children (21 & 17) and have lived all over the country. I have worked in Reception at Upperthong since 2010 and before that with children in Early Years with Special Educational Needs since 2005.  My original career was in research, audit and governance in the NHS but I discovered my love of working with little children through volunteering at my own children’s school.  I absolutely love working in Reception.

Su van Rooyen

Mrs Su van Rooyen

I am a Senior Teaching Assistant at Upperthong J & I. I have worked at Upperthong since 1998 when my own children, Thomas and Hannah were pupils, and am now one of the longest serving members of staff, so I have worked with three heads and many different teachers. I have supported children throughout the school in all year groups but for the last ten years I’ve mainly been based in KS1 in Years 1 & 2. I have undertaken many courses over the years attaining an NVQ level4 in Senior Teaching Assistant Certificate in 2008.

I thoroughly enjoy supporting the children in school with their learning and take great pleasure in seeing them grow in knowledge and confidence. I am part of the ECL (English, communication and language) curriculum team, as part of this I have the task of running the library within school. Along with other members of the team we oversee such things as guided/independent reading books, writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation as well as French!

I live locally and enjoy walking my Cocker Spaniel, Bruce with my husband Frank, in the hills and valleys. My children benefitted from their time at Upperthong and are grown up now, with my son just married and currently living in Australia, my daughter travelled after university and is back in Huddersfield working in PR.

Mrs Sharron Dawson

Hi I'm Sharron Dawson. I have lived in Holmfirth all my life, I also spent some of my earlier school days at  Upperthong and still live locally.

After becoming a parent helper when my son was in reception I decided to go back to college and re-train as an ETA and luckily became an ETA at Upperthong Junior & Infant School six years ago. Since joining Upperthong I have worked in both KS1 and KS2. I am currently in KS1 working with the children in Y2. During my time at Upperthong I have involved myself in all aspects of school life including being a member of the literacy curriculum team. It is a very fulfilling and satisfying position which I enjoy immensely.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, Shaun who left Upperthong to join Holmfirth High in 2012 and Martha who joined Upperthong in 2014.

Mrs Cathy Dessoy

I work three days a week in KS2 as a Teaching Assistant.  I have been working at Upperthong since September 2007 and spent 10 years working with the children in Reception.  It was fascinating to watch them develop from their first tentative steps when making their transition to school in September, through to becoming more confident and ready to progress into Year 1.  I am a member of the Arts Leadership Team developing Art, Dance, Drama and Music throughout school.

My family moved to Yorkshire in 2006 as my husband was lucky enough to be offered a job with the National Trust.  We have three children, Joe (23) works for a local tree surgeon, Hannah (21) has just finished studying English Language at Lancaster University, and Daniel (18) who started university in September.  In my spare time I enjoy singing, walking, running, yoga, baking, gardening and of course the National Trust.

Mrs Sue Thompson

Hello as most of you will know I’m Sue Thompson, I have possibly met or have at least spoken on the phone to most of you at one time or another. Although I am often mistaken on the phone for Helen Broomhead, which is something we can’t really get our heads around as we come from different parts of the country. I often hear the drop in parents’ voices when they know it’s me ringing them on the phone. Usually to be honest it’s because your little one is not feeling too well, so don’t worry I don’t take offence.

I grew up and lived for most of my life in Leicestershire, which is where I met my husband Paul. We have one daughter who is now all grown up. I moved to Yorkshire with my husband’s work, we love the area and have settled in well,

My work has always revolved around admin/office work. I joined the team at Upperthong J & I School 13 years ago and really enjoy working here.

The job includes the admin side which I enjoy, along with the pleasure of working with your children on a day to day basis You could say I have the best of both worlds. Please feel free to pop into the office at any time if you have any questions, we are here to help.

Mrs Helen Broomhead

My name is Helen Broomhead and I have worked in the office at Upperthong J & I School for nearly 8 years. Both my daughters came to Upperthong, my eldest is in her second year at university and my youngest is in her final year at Holmfirth High School. I try to keep active and play badminton, go circuit training and play cricket for Scholes Ladies.
